Eureka Area Rollover Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On Friday, August 18, 2017, a rollover accident involving a single vehicle near Eureka, California left an individual with traumatic injuries.

Collision Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) released a public report about the incident detailing that the collision took place at around 8:45 on Highway 299 close to Willow Creek, a census-designated place in Humboldt County. According to CHP, Lance Rayzacharias Britton of nearby Hoopa had been driving a Silver Chevy Monte Carlo on the westbound side of the highway a short distance west of the Boise Creek Campground at the time of the accident.

CHP explained that Britton lost control of his vehicle while driving over 40 miles per hour and veered off of the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll over several times down a steep embankment on the side of the highway. The vehicle reportedly came to a complete stop on its roof, trapping Britton inside.

Response and Injury

The Willow Creek Fire Department, as well as medical officials from CHP, responded to the incident. After finding a man trapped inside the overturned vehicle, responders extricated him through a window and found that he had sustained injuries. The man was subsequently taken by ambulance to the Eureka’s Mad River Community Hospital for further treatment.

The specific nature of the man’s injuries has not been reported by authorities, but CHP did note that his injuries were not severe.

Investigation

This collision is currently under investigation by CHP, who are trying to understand what caused the Britton to lose control of his vehicle in the first place. Officers have state that they have ruled out DUI as a contributing factor and that the injured driver had been wearing his seatbelt when the accident took place.

Factors that may have contributed to Britton losing control of his vehicle include dangerous roadway conditions, fatigue, distraction, the negligent actions of other drivers, and more.

Rollover Crashes

When a vehicle overturns, there is always the potential for serious and even fatal injuries. Evidence from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that, although rollover crashes account for only 3 percent of car accidents in the United States, they are responsible for 20 percent of auto accident fatalities. Furthermore, those killed in accidents in which vehicles overturned were usually not wearing a seatbelt.

Rollover Crash Statistics

  • Rollover accidents result in an average of 42,000 U.S. deaths annually
  • Most fatal rollover accidents are single-vehicle accidents
  • Less than half of single vehicle rollovers are preceded by collision-avoidance maneuvers
  • Most rollover accidents occur on two-way roads with no median structure.
