4-Car Accident Near Red Bluff

Four vehicles were involved in a Red Bluff car accident recently. Reports indicated that 29-year-old Donna Byrd was driving her 2012 Ford southbound on State Route 99E nearing Cone Grove Road. She was following a large big rig truck going 55 miles per hour, driven by William Turri, a 43-year-old Flournoy resident. Donna wanted to pass William in his 2010 Peterbilt so she pulled out from behind his semi truck and into the oncoming lane. Thomas Holmes, driving a 2016 International big rig was approaching in the opposite lane heading north when he saw Donna Byrd pull out into his lane to pass the other large truck. Holmes tried to swerve onto the shoulder to give Byrd enough room to squeeze through the middle of the two trucks but was unable to. Donna’s Ford clipped Holmes truck which caused her to also careen into William Turri’s truck. After bouncing off Turri’s rig, Donna collided headfirst with Daniel Graubart who was driving a 2013 Honda behind Thomas Holmes.

Accident Details

Graubart was carrying two other passengers, 56-year-old Tracy Graubart and a 3-year-old girl. All three occupants of the Honda were sent to the St. Elizabeth Community Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Donna Byrd was also injured in the multiple vehicle accident and was taken to the Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California. No reports of injuries to the two truck drivers also involved in the accident were given at the time by emergency officials. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

The quick thinking of Thomas Holms most likely saved the life of Donna Byrd as his maneuvers prevented a full head-on crash with his significantly larger vehicle. Reports show that Donna was traveling at around 55 miles per hour and Holmes was going some speed between 45 to 50 miles per hour. A head-on collision at those speeds with a semi truck could have very possibly been fatal.

Passing Safely

Earlier this month two people were killed in a head-on car accident along highway 70 near Oroville. A woman crossed over into the oncoming lane going 100 miles per hour to pass a vehicle in front of her. She pulled out in front of a Caltrans employee heading to work, traveling the opposite way. Both she and the Caltrans employee were killed in the resulting collision. When passing another car it is important to wait for the safest opportunity and make sure it is legal and you have enough room to do it.
