Woodland Car Accident Lawyer

I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland Car Accident Lawyer. Drivers and passengers understand that traumatic injuries are a risk every time someone gets inside of a motor vehicle. While it is acceptable to hope for the best, it is also smart to prepare for the worst. This means that everyone should remain up to date on some of the statistics and various personal injuries that people can and do sustain after a car accident. The serious nature of these injuries remind us that we should avoid distracted driving, drinking while driving and driving while fatigued or drowsy.

Statistics on Car Accidents

Unfortunately, car accidents persist as one of the leading causes of traumatic injuries in the United States. In 2012, over 5 million car accidents occurred in this country. Of these accidents, over 30 thousand of them involved fatalities. Furthermore, over 1.5 million people were injured in car accidents. Injuries can range widely in both type and severity. While some people may emerge from an auto accident safely, many others are bound to be injured. By understanding the types of injuries that can develop in car accidents, people can be better prepared when they get behind the wheel.

Car Accidents Resulting in Bone Fractures

One of the most serious injuries that someone can sustain in an accident is a bone fracture. There are many types of bone fractures; however, some are more common than others. For example, many people sustain femur fractures in car accidents. When someone’s legs are extended at the front of a vehicle, such as when they slam on their brakes, the legs take a significant amount of the impact. As the force is transmitted up the shaft of the legs, the tibia, fibula, and femur receive a significant amount of this force. Femur fractures, in particular, are serious because of the size of the bone. Bone fragments could damage some of the blood vessels or nerves, leading to peripheral nerve damage that requires a substantial period of traumatic injury rehabilitation.

Car Accidents Resulting in Head Injuries

In addition, we have seen drivers or their passengers suffer a head or brain injury from a car or truck accident. When a car stops short, the body of the driver is restrained by the seatbelt. In contrast, the head is not. If someone’s head makes contact with the steering wheel, dashboard, or window, this could lead to a skull fracture and traumatic brain injuries. These are serious concerns that always require immediate medical attention. If someone has bleeding in their brain, their brain could swell. This swelling could lead to potentially devastating impacts, such as a cerebral herniation.
