Mesothelioma Treatment Could Soon Include Common Vegetables
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Mesothelioma Lawyer. Mesothelioma is a devastating disease that has impacted many families in recent years. As mesothelioma has received more attention from the medical community, new diagnostic and treatment modalities have come into favor. Recently, new research has been developed that shows some common foods may have an anti-cancer compound that impacts how people live with mesothelioma.
A Deadly Cancer
For those who are unaware, mesothelioma is a deadly cancer with numerous risk factors, one of which being asbestos. While it is chiefly known as a pleural lung cancer, it can also develop in the pericardium or the peritoneum (the heart and abdomen, respectively). As the cancer seeds the tissues, it grows in an uncontrolled manner. It crowds out many of the body’s vital organs, causing them to shut down. Patients develop symptoms of mesothelioma as these organs struggle to perform their functions. Because of the serious nature of the disease, numerous treatment options have been developed. One of the newer options shows a link between cruciferous vegetables and cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy agent. Combining the two treatment options has demonstrated an ability to halt the growth of cancerous cells.
What is in Cruciferous Vegetables?
Recently, researchers out of Korea’s Sonnchunyang University embarked on a research project to study the impacts of a compound called sulforaphane on mesothelioma cells. The researchers combined this compound with cisplatin and observed that the dual therapy inhibited the growth of the cancerous cells. These are exciting results because sulforaphane is readily available in cruciferous vegetables. This class of vegetables includes common produce such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts. The researchers published their promising results in Molecular Medicine Reports, a well-respected, peer-reviewed journal. In their article, they discussed how the novel therapy halted the growth of cancerous tissues and induced apoptotic events, meaning the therapy caused the cancerous cells to die. Upon review of the cells, the combination induces the development of reactive oxygen species, molecules that are toxic to the health of the cells and causes them to die.
More Research is on the Horizon
While the early results are exciting, this doesn’t mean that people can eat their way to a cure for their cancer. The compound in the vegetables has shown promise; however, it is how people consume this compound that matters. Patients should also remember that this is only one treatment option out of many and could work well in combination with other therapies. Every patient should work closely with their physician to explore how to work this compound into their anti-cancer regimen. This will benefit patients everywhere.
