Lasers Show Potential in the Treatment of Brain Injuries

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Brain Injury Lawyer. While traumatic brain injuries remain a serious concern for patients and their families, exciting research is released on a regular basis. Although lasers are popular in science fiction films, they may soon play an important role in the treatment of head and brain injuries.

Treatment Options for a Brain Injury Patient

When a patient has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, their treatment is going to vary based on the causes; however, a few medications are common. Some patients could be placed on pain medication to help manage the symptoms. Other patients may require blood pressure control to ensure that adequate oxygen reaches the brain. Some injuries could merit emergent intervention from the neurosurgery team. If the brain swells inside of the skull, it runs the risk of herniation. This is a potentially devastating complication that could even be life-threatening. Every patient is different, as is their injury. For this reason, alternative treatment options exist.

Alternative Treatment Options

When traditional therapies don’t work, it is time to investigate the possibility of alternative therapies. Examples include placing the patient in a hyperbaric chamber. This is a chamber with a particularly high oxygen content. The thought is that by increasing the oxygen delivery to the tissues, including the brain, patients will recover faster. Recently, two doctors in Colorado have begun using lasers as a form of treatment. This treatment has shown some success in patients whose brain injury symptoms are refractory to other forms of treatment.

Early Signs of Success

The foundation that has provided laser therapy for patients with traumatic brain injuries is called the Neuro-Laser Foundation. The partnership is run by two individuals, a psychiatrist and a chiropractor. Over the past few years, they have treated around a hundred patients. Close to 90 percent of these individuals have reported improvement in their symptoms following treatment sessions. The treatment length varies from patient to patient; however, most consist of around twenty sessions spread out over several weeks. The foundation has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals detailing their findings.

More Research is Needed

While the early results are promising, the treatment is still in its infancy. The treatment group is relatively small and more research studies must be performed. On the other hand, the early results are undeniable. Many people have found symptom relief as a result of this laser therapy. It will be exciting to see what happens to laser treatment in the future.
