Traffic Accidents in the City of Arcata

Arcata is a historic seaside-city located on California’s stunning north coast. Residents enjoy a small-town life with easy access to incredible nature activities. However, Arcata has also seen its fair share of vehicle collisions. Those who spend time driving Arcata’s roadways may be interested in the accident statistics included in the following blog.

Accidents by Severity

The University of California at Berkeley has released statistics indicating that, during the three year period between 2013 and 2016, Arcata saw a total of 151 vehicle accidents resulting in injuries. Of these collisions, 3 involved fatal injuries, 20 involved severe injuries, 61 involved visible injuries that medical authorities did not consider severe, and 67 involved only a complaint of pain from one or more involved individuals.

Arcata’s frequency of fatal accidents compared to total injury collisions was about half that of Humboldt county as a whole.

Accidents by Type

In Arcata from 2013 to 2016, the most common type of accident to leave individuals with injuries was broadside accidents. There were a total of 33 broadside accidents, which accounted for 21.85 percent of traumatic collisions in Arcata.

After this, the five next most common types of collisions involving injuries in Arcata were, in order of most frequent to least frequent, pedestrian collisions, hit object accidents, rear-end accidents, head-on accidents, and accidents in which a vehicle overturned. These accounted for 18.84, 15.23, 12.58, 10.60, and 7.28 percent of trauma-causing accidents, respectively.

Dangerous Violations

Traffic laws exist to keep drivers safe. When those laws are violated, it seriously increases the risk that those using roadways will suffer injuries. In Arcata from 2013 to 2016, the most common traffic violation to cause people harm was improper turning violations. Drivers making improper turning maneuvers caused a total of 28 injury collisions over the period time in question.

Other violations that frequently caused injuries in Arcata include driving over the speed limit, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, and right-of-way violations.

Dangerous Intersections

For one reason or another, accidents seem to happen more often at some intersections. In Arcata, intersections that have a higher frequency of accidents include H and 14th Streets, H Street and Samoa Boulevard, 8th and K Streets, and Bayside Road at 7th Street.

Miscellaneous Stats

  • Half of all traffic-related pedestrian injuries in Arcata are caused by vehicles that violate pedestrian right-of-way at crosswalks
  • Almost one-third of Arcata’s accidents resulting in injury included bicyclists and only 6 percent included motorcycles
  • Drivers of vehicles are injured twice as often in Arcata accidents than passengers.
