Vacaville Police New Mobile Command Center
I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville personal injury lawyer. The City of Vacaville has considered and approved a proposal to purchase a mobile incident command center for the Vacaville Police Department (VPD). The command center will aid the department in responding effectively and promptly to emergency accidents within the city.
The Old System’s Shortcomings
As of right now, the VPD uses a system that includes two vehicles in order to respond to critical traffic incidents. According to a report from Vacaville city staff, the system takes at least two, and usually three officers to prepare the vehicles for critical response, deploy to the site of the incident, and dismantle the extra equipment after the incident has been taken care of. Additionally, the report detailed that the current vehicles used for emergency traffic response are almost a quarter-century old.
The report also indicated that the current system has been inadequate in responding to recent accidents, making note that during the local fires of the summer of 2017, the current mobile incident command center was not able to be deployed due to difficulties in maneuvering it.
The current system includes a trailer that has, over the course of decades, developed a handful of leaks in its side panels and roof that often cause water to pool up in the carpets of the trailer’s rooms. Mold has been reported to have been seen growing under the carpet in the spot that the water tends to pool.
Cost and Expected Type of Vehicle
The new system is estimated to cost anywhere from $300,000 to $800,000 dollars. The report concluded that when taking into consideration the size and budget of the VPD, the most viable option is to outfit a custom RV. An RV customized to include all of the equipment that the VPD uses is expected to be easier to maneuver than the old system and is also expected to only take one officer to deploy.
The VPD hopes to use this mobile incident command center to more effectively respond to emergency incidents in the city and to more quickly aid citizens who have sustained injuries. In some cases, the mobile incident command center may even help the VPD to prevent the deaths of citizens who have been critically injured.
