Preserving Life’s Memories With Legacy Therapy
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Lawyer. A Sacramento hospice chaplain named Connie Johnstone helps patients who are terminally ill by gathering information for a life review using legacy therapy. These cherished memories of a person’s life through this type of therapy are valuable, not only to them but to the family members and friends left behind. However, when a wrongful death takes the life of your loved one, the family is not only grieved by the loss of that person but by the loss of those memories.
Sharing Life Stories
By talking to patients in hospice care, Johnstone encourages them to share their life stories. Taking notes, she is able to put together a book of a patient’s intimate memories. When these stories are recorded for friends and family, it can not only help ease the patient’s final days by communicating their most important memories but provide a lasting memento for the family.
Legacy therapy is being used more in hospices, hospitals and palliative care centers. Consisting of half-hour to one-hour sessions, it is a way to connect with patients in a positive way without the use of drugs. Normally, these sessions are conducted by a trained chaplain, psychologist or social worker. One psychiatrist stated that not only does this type of therapy produce a document of thoughts by the dying patient, but it helps them find closure.
Wrongful deaths occur every day, sometimes through a motor vehicle accident and other times through medical malpractice or for other reasons. A wrongful death, by legal definition, is one where the person died because of a negligent act by another individual or company. Examples would be when a drunk driver hits a vehicle, which results in a death, or when a patient dies due to misdiagnosis or error during surgery.
