Fatal Motorcycle Accident Involves Auburn Man

I’m Ed Smith an Auburn Motorcycle Accident Attorney. On Monday, June 12, 2017, an accident involving a motorcycle and a full-size pickup truck occurred on Highway 49 in Calaveras County, south of Butte Canyon and the Mokelumne River. The incident happened along a stretch of highway known as the “13 Curves” which is a popular route for motorcyclists in the area.

What Happened

Four Motorcyclists were traveling southbound on Highway 49 when one of them lost control of his bike, a 2010 Ducati Streetfighter, while attempting to pass a vehicle. The bike and rider both slid into oncoming traffic where he collided with a 2005 Dodge truck. The motorcycle victim, 41-year-old Jared Salisbury from the small city of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was confirmed to have died at the scene upon the arrival of first responders. The man driving the truck was identified as 56-year-old John Maberry of Auburn, California.

How did it Happen?

While the accidental collision continues to be investigated by authorities, the California Highway Patrol has ruled out drugs and alcohol as a factor in the incident. The “13 curves” are located in a heavily wooded area with many hills which make it hard to see through the bends and turns. Blind corners can be extremely dangerous when traveling at high speeds and also when passing other vehicles. Accelerating into a turn can also cause one to lose control of their vehicle and cause serious, sometimes fatal, traumatic injuries.

Route 49 is known as the “Golden Chain Highway” and is featured on many scenic drive websites. A best rides list found on motorcycleroads.com puts a section of Highway 49 at number 25 out of 97 best routes for motorcycle rides in California. A reviewer on the site states that the route is not meant for beginners and many of the motorcycle accidents usually involve inexperienced riders. This portion of the highway lies an hour and a half south of the crash site. It has many historical landmarks along the way.

When In a Motorcycle Accident…

If you are involved or witness a motorcycle accident it is important to call emergency services right away. There is an increased chance of head and brain injuries, and also neck, back, and spinal cord injuries because of the motorcyclist’s exposure to bodily injury make it a risk to move the victim. Assess the situation and, if safely possible, try to divert traffic around the accident until the emergency services arrive to take over.
