DUI Crash Injures Vacaville Man
I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville personal injury lawyer. On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, a motor vehicle collision on the north end of Fairfield injured a Vacaville man and led to his arrest under charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The car accident occurred in Fairfield on the westbound section of highway Interstate 80 only a short distance east of the junction at Manuel Campos Parkway. According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 40-year-old male resident of Vacaville had been driving a utility van at dangerous speeds on the highway when he suddenly lost control and sideswiped two separate big rig trucks and collided with the rear end of a van.
After colliding with the three vehicles, the driver veered into the right shoulder of the highway and his vehicle overturned, sliding to a stop on its side. During the overturning of the vehicle, the driver was ejected through the window.
Response and Injuries
Emergency medical responders reported that the man had been seriously injured during the accident and he was transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital so he could receive emergency treatment. No further reports on the specific injuries that the driver sustained were available and CHP has not yet released the identity of the man because his hospitalization has delayed the booking process.
No other persons were harmed in this accident, although all three other vehicles also sustained varying amounts of damage.
Traffic and Investigation
According to reports from drivers in the area directly after the accident, one lane of highway Interstate 80 was closed for over an hour and caused minor traffic. CHP was able to determine that the crash was partly caused by driving under the influence. However, CHP currently has this incident under investigation in order to fully understand all relevant information.
Driving Under the Influence
According to the United States’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), driving while intoxicated is partly to blame for nearly one-third of all fatal auto accidents that occur in the U.S. Additionally, CDC reports that the age group that is most frequently involved in fatal crashes while under the influence of alcohol is people who are between 21 and 24 years of age, with this group accounting for about thirty-three percent. The two largest groups following that group, CDC reports, are those aged 25 to 34 at thirty percent, and those aged 35 to 44 at twenty-nine percent.
The CDC also indicates that, of drivers involved in crashes, those with an illegally high amount of alcohol in their bodies are about seven times more likely to have been previously convicted of driving under the influence.
