Two Multi-Vehicle Accidents on Highway 101 in Ventura

I’m Ed Smith, a Ventura car accident lawyer. Two separate accidents occurred in Ventura on Monday, May 8. The first accident reported no injuries, while there were three injured in the second accident. None of the injured persons appear to have been transported to hospitals in the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

What Happened

The accident in Ventura was reported around 10:45 in the morning along Highway 101 northbound near the exit for South California Street, when an 18-wheeler and an additional three vehicles crashed together. According to the CHP, there were no injuries from the crash, and police were still at the scene about noon  time, waiting for tow trucks to remove several vehicles off the highway.

An additional accident occurred shortly afterward, when three vehicles were involved in an accident along Highway 101 near the on ramp for South Seaward Avenue. In this accident, three persons were reported as injured.

Multiple Vehicle Accidents

According to an insurance agent website, it is more difficult to assign fault when multi-vehicle accidents occur. While one driver may admit his or her mistake, in some accidents it might be necessary to use reconstruction expert opinion to firmly establish fault.

In some accidents, such as a rear-end collision, it might be easier to decide liability. However, even here, if the driver in front slowed suddenly, the fault might be divided between the two drivers. In some cases, an argument can be made that the rear driver should have stayed behind the other vehicle at a safe distance to allow him or her adequate maneuverability in such events.

Reconstruction experts use a variety of measures to determine what happened. In addition, witnesses to the accident are often able to fill in the blanks. Photos taken at the scene might provide evidence too.

Determining fault in an accident that involves multiple vehicles can be difficult. However, they commonly occur when one vehicle slows or stops suddenly. The vehicles in line behind the first vehicle may not have sufficient time to stop, so the second car crashes into the first, etc. In California, fault can be split between two or more drivers.
