Dental Techs Impacted by Mesothelioma

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Mesothelioma Lawyer. There has been a significant amount of attention paid to the occupations exposed to asbestos; however, many of these occupations were associated with the construction industry. Now, dental technicians have been added to the group of asbestos-related occupations, according to a new Italian study.

Mesothelioma is Associated with Different Occupations

Mesothelioma can take many forms, such as peritoneal mesothelioma, and can impact patients who have been exposed to many different mesothelioma causes; however, mesothelioma is predominantly a lung disease that impacts jobs such as factory workers, ship builders, sandblasters, and other construction-related fields. Over the years, a significant amount of research has been performed and trends among the sufferers have been studied. Now, people working as dental technicians have started to be diagnosed with a form of mesothelioma called pleural mesothelioma, a type of mesothelioma that affects the lining of the lungs.

The Study Results

An Italian study looked at patients suffering from mesothelioma symptoms who had a history of working as a dental technician. The researchers analyzed the potential causes of mesothelioma in these patients. When their histories were examined, they realized that the material used to line the casts and the dressings in dental patients used asbestos, potentially exposing everyone in the dental office, and their family members and friends, to asbestos. These patients developed mesothelioma when the asbestos fibers were released into the air and later inhaled, lodging in their lungs and causing disease.

The Timing Varies

When the patients in the study were analyzed, the researchers found that the dental technicians had been working in the practice for different amounts of time, ranging from just a few years to over three decades. This means that patients may not require a significant amount of exposure to develop asbestos or they could take decades to develop the disease. Some patients could be living with mesothelioma and not notice it. Although the dental industry has not made it into the spotlight when it comes to occupations at risk of developing mesothelioma, the American Journal of Industrial Medicine could change their mind and add the occupation to the list. Despite the amount of research surrounding this deadly disease, much of the information about the disease is still hidden under a cloud of darkness. Therefore, anyone who is at risk of being exposed to asbestos should seek expert medical attention for more information today.
