126th Annual Santa Barbara County Fair

I’m Ed Smith, a Santa Barbara car accident lawyer. For 125 years Santa Barbara residents, have celebrated their community with a fair, and this year they plan to to do it once again. The 126th Santa Barbara Fair will be held July 12-16.

The Fair’s History

The first fair was held in September 1891 and was known as the Santa Maria Valley Fair. It was produced by the 37th District Agricultural Association. In 1920, the name was changed to the Santa Barbara County Fair, and the location was moved to East Main Street. The fair was destined to move two more times. After WWII, the fair found it’s present home.

The fair was an instant hit, and records show that the crowd exceed 17,000 in 1928. Historians note that for the 1935 fair, 700 cars packed the parking area.

This year, the fair promises a robust entertainment extravaganza including well-known comedian Gabriel Iglesias on July 13. As always, music, carnival rides and many different kinds of food will be enjoyed by those of all ages. Arts and crafts are a big part of the fair, and you can find everything from jellies and fine art to award-winning photography and wine.

You can check out the livestock in the junior auction, or enjoy the horticultural displays and the rodeo. There is also a destruction derby and shows designed for kids and educational exhibits. Musical artists include Boyz II Men, Foreigner and Miranda Lambert.

Safety at the Fair

It is important to stay safe while enjoying the fair. Using common sense is one way to protect yourself. Staying with friends and not going it alone, particularly at night, helps you avoid unwanted problems.

Another potential problem is staying hydrated. In July, the temperatures often soar, and every effort to drink ample amounts of water while you’re walking about helps you avoid dehydration.

Food vendors are required by the California Food Safety Code to make sure foods are safe for human consumption. Foods must be kept at safe temperatures to prevent bacteria from growing and causing food poisoning. If you are unsure how long food has been sitting out, ask. The vendor should be able to tell you.

Carnival Rides

Carnival rides are one of the most enjoyable aspects of the fair, particularly for young children. However, each year children are injured on such rides. It is always important that a small child be adequately supervised, making sure that restraints or harnesses are used and extremities are kept in the ride.

However, there are times when mechanical failure and human error are responsible for injuries. Annually, there are 20 injuries each day for May through September on amusement-type rides.

The types of injuries include:

The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees carnival rides. However, it is difficult for the agency to oversee each event. The rides must be inspected to make sure that maintenance is done and all safety concerns resolved. If a provider of carnival rides fails to comply, they can be liable for injuries on the ride.
