Oxnard Strawberry Festival

I’m Ed Smith, an Oxnard personal injury lawyer. As residents of Oxnard know, the annual California Strawberry Festival is scheduled to run May 20-21 and is held to benefit local charities. Residents as well as visitors from out of town always enjoy the festivities as well as the great food, entertainment and camaraderie, and it is expected to draw a large crowd. I hope that everyone has a great time and stays safe, both on the roads and at the event.

What You Can Expect This Year

This great event features 50 food booths, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment and almost 200 arts and crafts booths. Don’t forget to enter one of the annual contests. This year, there will be the delicious pie eating contest, the strawberry tart toss, an obstacle relay race where contestants will construct and eat a strawberry dish at top speed. It also has a best hat contest, which is judged during the promenade and, last but not least, the best dressed baby contest, which should draw a lot of smiles.

Entertainment for Children

Children are plied with fun with their own Strawberryland activities. The Strawberryland Kids Theater will have live performances with clowns, jugglers, magic and puppet shows, along with the judging for best dressed baby. In addition, there will be bouncy slides and carnival rides. The festival attends to child safety by offering Kids Care Zone, where parents can get fingerprinting IDs for free and make use of the changing and nursing areas in comfort.

Safety on Rides

Rides at a festival can be great fun, however, there are times when accidents happen. Mechanical issues as well as employee error can result in significant injuries, including blunt force trauma, spinal injuries, amputations, falls and head injuries among others.

Overall, children aged 10-14 are commonly injured, accounting for roughly 18 percent of all such accidents. In addition, younger children represent 75 percent of those who fall or are ejected from a ride. Rollercoasters account for about 31 percent of amusement park accidents while spinning-type rides account for 22 percent.

Overall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that in 2015, 45,000 injuries occurred on amusement rides. Of these, 30,000 involved minors.

Common Carrier Lawsuits

Lawsuits are filed against common carriers such as buses, trains and taxis. In California, such lawsuits can be filed against companies who provide amusement rides to the public. This includes large amusement parks and smaller county and city fairs.

State regulations provide for safety measures aimed at keeping parks and fairs safe. If owners do not take appropriate measures to ensure rider safety and an injury occurs, a common carrier lawsuit can be filed.
