Ojai Man Dies in Rollover Accident Near Highway 33 in Ventura

When you need a Ventura personal injury lawyer, call me, Ed Smith, for experienced help. An accident where a vehicle ran off the road on April 7, resulted in the death of a man from Ojai. According to local firefighters, a search was conducted to see if there were other people in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but no evidence was found that there were.

What Happened

The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident was discovered about 8 o’clock in the morning on Friday. The pickup, driven by a 64-year-old man, was traveling along Highway 33 in a southerly direction. Near Peking and West Main streets, the vehicle exited the road, crashed through a fenced area, headed up an embankment and flipped over, landing at the bottom of a riverbed.

Investigation of the Crash

The battalion chief of the fire department in Ventura stated that the accident probably occurred a few hours before its discovery. The vehicle was located by a volunteer researcher for the water district, who spied the upside-down car and called it in to the Ventura police. The medical examiner’s office in Ventura identified the man who was killed in the crash and reported that he had died of blunt-force type head injuries as a result of the accident.

Incidence of California Single-Vehicle Accidents

There are a number of reasons a motor vehicle may be involved in a single-car accident. According to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, single-vehicle accidents in California were responsible for the deaths of 1,860 individuals in 2015, only one less than the previous year. However, the incidence of rollover accidents increased from 696 in 2014 to 743 in 2015. A vehicle running off the road and causing a fatality in single-vehicle accidents increased by over 80, from 1,374 in 2014 to 1,458 in 2015. Other causes for single-vehicle accidents can involve a big truck, speeding and accidents at intersections.

Ways to Avoid a Single-Vehicle Accident

  • Be adequately rested when driving. An overtired driver can get drowsy or fall asleep at the wheel.
  • Avoid distracted driving. Some major causes of distracted driving include texting and driving, accessing GPS, fiddling with the radio, conversing with passengers in the vehicle and eating while driving.
  • Keep your vehicle in good condition. Worn tires, bad brakes or mechanical problems that have not been resolved can cause an accident.
  • Be prepared for the weather. Ice, snow and rainy weather can affect a vehicle’s performance. Use chains when called for, reduce speed and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others on the road.
  • Don’t drink or use drugs and drive. Alcohol and drugs can adversely affect reaction time and judgment.
