I’m Ed Smith, an Anderson personal injury lawyer. Anderson, California, is a peaceful town in Shasta County where lumber and retail work are the main industries. Traffic in the area is less than its southern neighbors. Overall, accidents do not happen as frequently as the state average, and fatalities are much lower. I thought residents might be interested in some of the statistics.

Percentage of Fatal Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of fatalities in 2015 rose by about 7.2 percent over the previous year. This resulted in 35,052 deaths. This level of percentage increase has not been recorded since 1966. While the numbers are lower than they were 10 years ago, safety features, such as seat belt restraints, air bags and an effort to target drunk driving, are higher now than they were at any time in history. One reason for the increased level of fatalities might be that an unprecedented number of Americans are taking to the road.

The increase is not limited to cars and trucks. The number of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities also increased in 2015. This may be due to more people taking up cycling and walking as a form of regular exercise. Motorcyclists in 2015 were involved in fatal accidents 8 percent more often.

Causes of Fatal Accidents

Drinking and driving are one of the major causes of fatal accidents. Impaired drivers often weave in traffic and leave their lane, a common cause of head-on collisions particularly on rural roads. Distracted driving is another major cause of fatalities. Using a smart phone or texting takes the driver’s attention away from the road as does eating while driving.

Other common reasons for fatal accidents are:

  • Not yielding the right of way
  • Not adjusting to road or weather conditions
  • Improper turns
