Common Ways Hot Tub Electrocution Occurs

I’m Ed Smith, a Roseville Personal Injury Lawyer. Hot tubs are a popular tool that people use at home, at the neighborhood pool, or at the local gym to help release some of the lactic acid after a long workout or simply to relax and have some fun. When people are using a hot tub, it is important to understand common ways that electrocutions can occur so that they can be sufficiently avoided.

Extension Cords are a Common Culprit of Hot Tub Electrocution

Extension cords are a popular tool because they can place appliances that otherwise wouldn’t be in reach within a few feet of people’s hands. Many people who use hot tubs use extension cords to connect devices to an electrical outlet so that they do not have to exit the hot tub to use them. In addition to creating a tripping hazard that can lead to bone fractures or traumatic injuries, extension cords can also fray over time. Furthermore, people can also use extension cords to overload a wall socket or pull on the cord to disconnect it quickly. This can cause injuries, leaving people caring for electrical burns. This could also cause kidney failure in burn victims.

Electrical Outlets are Nearby

Unlike indoor pools that are typically dozens of feet from the nearest electrical outlet, many people place a hot tub in their bathroom or bonus room, leaving it close to electrical outlets. This means that the outlets can be splashed from the hot tub, leading to electrocution or even a house fire. Furthermore, people may not see the outlet as they exit the hot tub and can accidentally come in contact with it while wet, leading to electrocution, a traumatic brain injury, or even a spinal cord injury among other injuries involving paralysis. Brain injuries can lead to seizure disorders all from an electrical shock. Take steps to cover the electrical outlets with the proper protection.

People Place Electrical Appliances Near the Hot Tub

It’s not unusual for people to want to relax in their hot tub and enjoy a TV show and have a snack. In fact, people may be so focused on entertainment while in the hot tub that they place electrical appliances such as blenders, toasters, and microwaves near the hot tub. People need to remember that these are electrical appliances with a cord attached to them that have possible implications for product liability. If they fall in the hot tub, they can quickly electrocute the person, leading to polytrauma and numerous disastrous injuries. Do not place electrical appliances near the hot tub at all, particularly in locations where they could fall into the tub and cause burn injuries and a wrongful death.
