Truck Driver Suffers Burn Injuries in Big Rig Crash

Two big rigs crashed along Highway 160 near Antioch during the morning hours of Monday, April 24, 2017. The collision caused one of the big rigs to catch fire, resulting in major injuries to one driver.

What Happened?

A tractor-trailer truck was traveling southbound along Highway 160 about 2 miles north of the Antioch Bridge. For unknown reasons, the truck veered into the northbound lanes of travel. The truck struck the front of an oncoming big rig on the driver’s side moments before sideswiping the vehicle. The impact of the collision caused the cab and part of the trailer of the southbound truck to slide down an embankment along the east side of the roadway, where the truck later caught fire. The other truck was also damaged by fire.

The Rio Vista Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 10:25 am. Firefighters extinguished the fires 20 minutes later.

Driver Suffers Burn Injuries

According to Michael Bradley, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Public Information Officer, the driver of the southbound big rig may have been ejected from the truck due to the collision. The driver suffered severe burn injuries. The driver was rushed by a CHP helicopter to a Sacramento hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck traveling northbound suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The Antioch Bridge was closed down as a result of the big rig crash. Highway 160 was also closed down between Highway 12 and Wilbur Avenue. Motorists traveling between East Contra Costa County and the Rio Vista area are urged to use Interstate 5 and Highway 4.
