Wrist Fractures

What Is a Wrist Fracture?

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrist Injury Lawyer. In the world of bone fractures, a broken wrist is a common injury. In fact, most people know someone who has suffered a pediatric wrist or hand fracture. Because it is a common injury, there is a wide variety of ways that someone can have their wrist broken. If you have suffered a broken wrist, be prepared by knowing what to do first. Then take all the necessary steps to seek medical attention so that you will make a full and complete recovery.

Is the Wrist Broken?

There are many ways that people can have their wrist broken. People may slip and fall on a pool deck or be involved in an accident leading to a traumatic injury. Regardless of the circumstances, people need to assess themselves to look for signs of a broken wrist. In addition to pain at the injury site, people may notice that they have trouble moving their wrist. If someone has a broken wrist, they might even feel the bones grinding back and forth when they move their wrist. A broken wrist will typically swell as the body responds to the fracture. If someone has any of these symptoms, there is a good chance that the wrist is broken.

What did the Doctor Say?

Someone who has any of these symptoms should seek the attention of a medical professional immediately because a bone fracture is not an injury that someone can simply “walk off.” The doctor will likely ask about the mechanism of injury, or how the wrist was injured. Then, the doctor will perform a physical exam to get a better idea regarding the severity of the injury. If the doctor suspects a fracture, he or she will likely order an x-ray to get a better look of the bone. Even if they are certain the wrist has been broken, they will need to grade the severity of the wrist fracture before proceeding with the treatment plan. The doctor will likely take an x-ray from several different angles to ensure that no injuries are missed.

Wrist Fractures – How can I Prevent This from Happening Again?

Part of the treatment of any bone fracture is ensuring that the injury does not return. People should always take the time to think about how the injury occurred. While some accidents are unavoidable, other accidents could potentially be prevented with a little more caution. In fact, sometimes people have their wrist broken for reasons that aren’t even in their control. For example, an auto accident or a slip and fall accident might have been prevented by simply putting down the phone or making sure that proper markings are present in a wet area. These are all examples of circumstances that could have prevented a broken wrist from developing in the first place.
