Mercedes-Benz NHTSA Fire Hazard Safety Recall

Mercedes-Benz NHTSA Fire Hazard Safety Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a Safety Recall Report  dated February 23, 2017. The report indicates that newer Mercedes-Benz models are under a recall for a potential fire hazard. The recall includes 354,434 as potentially involved vehicles.

Why?

The manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, Daimler AG (DAG), indicated that certain models may experience difficulties during the starting procedure. This comes from the starting current limiter which can be overloaded under certain conditions while starting the vehicle.

In the incident of a starter becoming blocked due to engine or transmission damage, a very high electric current may flow through the starting limiter during subsequent start attempt. When a driver attempts to start the engine repeatedly regardless of the engine failing to crank, the very high current may cause the starting current limiter to overheat. In a more severe case, the surrounding vehicle components may melt which could possibly ignite and cause a fire.

Which Vehicles are Included in the Recall?

The following list of 354,434 Mercedes-Benz vehicles included in the recall may be read here.

How Will My Recalled Vehicle Be Fixed?

If you are the owner of a recalled Mercedes-Benz for the fire hazard risk, you will need to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have your vehicle repaired. As a precautionary measure, the dealer will be responsible of installing an additional fuse in your vehicle’s electrical line to the starter. Owners will be notified in late March and again in July 2017 when parts become available.
