Hit-and-Run Crash Kills Merced Boy
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury attorney. A car accident involving a hit-and-run driver occurred in west Modesto during the night of Monday, March 13, 2017. Unfortunately, the accident caused multiple victims to suffer traumatic injuries and one to suffer grave injuries.
A man from Merced was traveling in his 2012 Toyota sedan eastbound along Hatch Road in the vicinity of Carpenter Road shortly before 11:00 pm. A Modesto man was behind the wheel of his 2016 Dodge sedan traveling northbound along Carpenter Road, approaching Hatch Road. Both drivers entered the intersection where the front of the Dodge struck the left side of the Toyota. After the crash, the driver of the Dodge fled from the scene.
The motorist of the Toyota sedan was identified as 30-year-old Mayra Rangel from Merced. Rangel escaped injuries in the crash, however, his passengers did not. There were three passengers in Rangel’s vehicle at the time of the crash. A 30-year-old man and a 9-year-old girl, were taken to the hospital to be treated for major injuries. The other passenger, an unidentified 11-year-old boy, unfortunately suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Our condolences are with the loved ones of the boy who passed away in this tragic hit-and-run crash.
Hit-and-Run Driver Detained
The driver of the 2016 Dodge sedan was identified as 31-year-old Traves Krause. Krause left the scene after the crash and was later contacted at his home by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Krause was transported to the Doctors Medical Center to be treated for moderate injuries. Afterwards, he was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail and will be held without bail, facing charges of murder, felony hit-and-run causing injury or death, driving under the influence causing injury, vehicular manslaughter and resisting arrest.
People that have been involved in a hit-and-run accident are oftentimes confused about who is responsible to cover the damages. Some may think that they may have to front the medical and property damages expenses. However, those damages may be covered under a policy holder’s Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Coverage (UM). It is best to consult with an experienced personal injury lawyer for more information.
