Suisun Crash Causes Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Suisun car accident lawyer. In Suisun, on Saturday, February 25, 2017, a two-vehicle accident necessitated emergency medical services for at least one of the parties involved.

Accident Details

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the accident early in the morning at about 3:05 a.m. after receiving a report of a wreck on Highway 12. The collision occurred only a short distance west of the intersection of the highway and Marina Boulevard. The vehicles were found on the eastbound side of the highway where one had apparently collided with the other, resulting in the highway being partially blocked to early morning traffic.

Injuries and Damage

CHP’s records indicate that emergency medical services were called to the site of the accident. Reports of the identities of the drivers and passengers as well as what types of injuries they received are currently unavailable. Towing services were required to clear the wreck off the highway. Since the accident occurred early in the morning, there was no serious traffic caused by the temporary blockage of the roadway.

Causal Factors

CHP did not indicate whether or not the accident was due to driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and investigation into the incident is ongoing. Other factors that may have contributed the collision include speeding, road rage, and distracted driving.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is a common factor in auto accidents and contributes to thousands of deaths across the United States each year. Studies by the Centers for Disease Control conducted research in 2013 that revealed that 18 percent of collisions that resulted in serious injuries were caused totally or in part by distracted driving. This is a serious problem which includes driving while on the phone, texting, watching videos, or simply anything that takes one’s eyes off of the road or hands off of the steering wheel. Additionally, this problem is increasing in frequency. According to the CDC, the rate of people who were injured in car accidents involving a distracted driver rose by 10 percent in the years between 2013 and 2011.

Teens and Distracted Driving

Almost 40 percent of teens openly admit to regularly texting while they are driving. Due to the widespread popularity of social media apps such as Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook, as well as how easy texting apps make it to communicate, teenaged drivers are receiving constant notifications and, therefore, temptations to look away from the road. However, there are applications that aim to help protect teen drivers and make roadways safer by discouraging interaction with cell phones while driving. The apps DriveOFF, DriveMode, and DriveScribe all track how fast one is traveling and take measures to keep drivers away from their phones while they are operating a vehicle.
