Winters Putah Creek Bridge Replacement
Hello, my name is Ed Smith, and I’m a Winters Auto Accident Attorney. When people think about the beautiful city of Winters, CA, they likely think about the gorgeous weather, friendly people, and beautiful scenery. The city was founded back in 1875 and the city has developed an impressive track record over the years for being one of the most popular cities in the state to raise a family. The city works hard to improve on the infrastructure for their citizens and they recently announced that they’re beginning work on the Putah Creek bridge replacement project.
The Original Bridge is Over 100 Years Old
The original bridge was built back in 1907. At its time, it was the longest bridge in its class west of the Mississippi River. The bridge contained reinforced concrete that was strong enough to handle almost anything that was on the road at the time. The bridge was heavily used in the ensuing years and was vital to the growth and commerce of the city; however, like many pieces of infrastructure in the country, the bridge started to buckle under the wear and tear of the traffic.
The Bridge was Recommended to be Replaced
Back in 1981, both government officials and local citizens started to notice that the bridge was falling into a state of disrepair. In fact, the California Department of Transportation inspected the bridge and decided that a construction zone needed to be set up to replace the bridge; however, the bridge was still used for several years after this point. In 2000, the City of Winters and the county of Solano both decided that work needed to be done to replace the bridge. Both parties realized that the bridge was not safe to be used. In fact, serious accidents could result from using a bridge that has been recommended for replacement.
Work has Begun on a Replacement Bridge
The new Putah Creek bridge is going to be a significant benefit to the community. While it is currently a construction zone, the new bridge is going to be close to 500 feet long and over 40 feet wide. The bridge will also include two complete traffic lanes so that cars can pass safely in both directions. Furthermore, the bridge is going to contain both a pedestrian sidewalk and a crosswalk that will connect the traffic on the Putah Creek bridge to a trestle bridge that is nearby. The bridge will also have adequate lighting so that it can be used safely at night.
Accidents are Common on Bridges
There has been a serious issue in the United States with bridges falling into states of disrepair. When bridges are deemed necessary for replacement, potholes and cracks can develop. This isn’t safe for cars to pass on and can increase the risk of pedestrian and auto accidents. In addition, people should keep in mind that bridges freeze before the roads, leading to unsafe conditions as well.
