Foothill Farms Fatal Bicycle Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Citrus Heights bicycle accident attorney. A middle school student was riding his bicycle in Foothill Farms during the morning hours of Tuesday, February 14, 2017. A vehicle was pulling out of a parking lot and crashed into the student. Unfortunately, the bicycle accident caused the boy to suffer fatal injuries.

What Happened?

A Foothill Ranch Middle School student was riding his bicycle along the southbound sidewalk of Hillsdale Boulevard in the vicinity of Palm Avenue. A motorist traveling in a white SUV was pulling out of a 7-Eleven parking lot at the time and was attempting to conduct a right turn. The vehicle crashed into the young bicyclist.

What Caused the Bicycle Accident?

Authorities have not yet released a cause of the bicycle accident. Investigators stated that the driver was not under the influence at the time of the accident. It could be presumed that the driver did not yield the right-of-way for the boy riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.

Sadly, the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the boy caused him to suffer fatal injuries. The boy was pronounced deceased at the scene of the bicycle accident. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will be handling the case to determine whether the motorist will be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle accidents tend to often occur due to the negligence of a motorist on the roadway. In Sacramento alone, there were 643 bicycle accidents from 2013 to 2015 in total. Although bicycle accidents can be prevented and are not as common as automobile accidents, they still continue to take place along roadways throughout California today.

The most common types of bicycle accidents include the following:

  • Drivers failing to yield the right-of-way to bicyclists riding on the sidewalk or in bicycle lane
  • Drivers conducting left or right-hand turns in front of a bicyclist
  • Drivers rear-ending a bicyclist
