Big Rig Crash Kills Manteca Residents
I’m Ed Smith, a Manteca wrongful death attorney. During the morning hours of Saturday, December 31, 2016, two vehicles were involved in an automobile accident along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Bakersfield. Moments after the initial car accident, a big rig crashed into both vehicles which caused a chain-reaction of crashes along this stretch of the freeway. Unfortunately, the big rig that crashed into one of the vehicles involved in the initial crash caused the occupants to suffer fatal injuries.
Big Rig Crashes Into Crashed Cars
Two motorists were involved in an automobile accident along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. These two drivers pulled their vehicles over on the side of the highway to ensure the safety of other motorists traveling along this roadway. For reasons that are not known, a big rig driver was also traveling in the same direction and struck the two crashed vehicles. Other drivers that were trailing behind from the big rig did not have time to react to the trucking accident. This resulted in a chain reaction of accidents that involved 30 vehicles in total. This prompted the closure for this area of Interstate 5 southbound for most of the day.
What Caused the Crash?
Authorities from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) have not indicated an exact cause for the crash yet. Low visibility due to foggy conditions along this stretch of Interstate 5 may have contributed.
