Hit-and-Run Injures Sacramento Toddler

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento auto accident attorney. In Sacramento, on Friday, December 2, 2016, a 3-year old toddler was the victim of a hit-and-run. The incident took place a short while after 5p.m. while the toddler and his mother were crossing Willamsbourgh Drive near the intersection of major streets, Florin Road and Franklin Boulevard. The child is expected to survive, and parents are pleading anybody who might have information regarding the hit-and-run to contact the California Highway Patrol, which currently has the incident under investigation.

Incident Details

Benjamin Lopez, the father of the toddler, told reporters that he saw the vehicle barely miss his wife before it struck his son. He also reported that the road which the victim had been crossing is not very well lit. This may have contributed to Marissa Lopez, the mother and wife, not noticing the oncoming vehicle in time to ensure her son avoided it. Marissa indicated that she waited for several cars to pass before deeming it safe to cross the street and that the vehicle, possibly a black SUV, was speeding down the street with no headlights on before it crashed into her son and drove away.

The child, named Errol, immediately fell to the ground and was motionless. According to Marissa, many cars and pedestrians in the area gathered around the scene to see if Errol would survive. A witness to the accident reportedly took the boy in her hands and was praying over him when the mother and other witnesses noticed him beginning to cry. “Had it not been for those certain people who tried to help,” Marissa said, “I don’t know what would have happened.”

Difficult Recovery

Errol was immediately rushed to the nearest emergency room by ambulance for treatment of traumatic and life-threatening injuries. Emergency medical responders were able save him, despite his arrival in critical condition. He was released from the hospital five days later, but has a long recovery ahead, needing to heal from fractures to his skull as well as a punctured spleen. Marissa reported that, although their son is still home and safe, the recovery process is stressful because their son wants to be active, but is in too much pain to do so.

Hit-and-Runs

Marissa and Benjamin hope that by finding and pressing charges on the criminal hit-and-run offender that injured their son, they might prevent other pedestrians from being threatened in the future by the unknown driver’s dangerous tendencies. If you are witness to or involved in a hit-and-run car collision, it is urgent that you report the crime as soon as possible. When these types of incidents are reported promptly, there is a much higher chance of the errant driver being caught and held responsible for the damages they have caused.
