AAA Tipsy Tow Northern California

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced auto accident attorney. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is offering assistance to those who need a safe ride home this New Year’s Eve holiday. AAA will be offering free rides home for motorists who have been consuming alcohol. They will also tow your car home for you. What a wonderful way to help reduce the number of drunk driving accidents.

Reducing the Number of Drunks on the Road

The AAA created the “Tipsy Tow” program in an effort to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers out on the road tomorrow evening. The program will be offered to drivers free of charge throughout Northern California. The free tow is a one-way ride for the motorist and their vehicle to arrive safely at their home or destination. The program only allows a distance of up to 10 miles.

When Will the Service Be Offered?

The “Tipsy Tow” program will start at 6:00 pm on December 31, 2016 until 6:00 am on January 1, 2017.

Do I have to be a AAA Member?

No. You do not have to be a AAA member to participate in this free program. You may contact (800) 222-4357 on Christmas Eve and during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day to inform the operator of your location and receive a safe ride home.

Drunk Driving Accident Statistics

In a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the year 2014, there were 9,967 victims that were fatally injured in drunk driving accidents. In 2015, there were 323 motor vehicle accidents in Merced alone. Approximately 38 (11.8%) of those accidents involved alcohol.

Responsible Driving Behavior

Responsible driving behavior consists of a driver that does not drive after they have been drinking. Review the following responsible driving behavior tips created by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NTHSA) if you or a loved one are celebrating the New Year’s holiday:

  • Before you consume alcohol, choose a designated driver that will not be drinking to ensure a safe ride home.
  • Do not allow your friends to operate a motor vehicle while alcohol-impaired.
  • If you have been drinking alcohol, contact a ride service to take you home.
  • If you are the host of a party that is serving alcohol, be certain to make sure that all your guests depart from the party with a sober motorist.
  • Always utilize your seat belt, the NTHSA states that it is the best defense tactic to prevent injuries from impaired drivers on the roadway.
