Elk Grove Dog Attack

Young Girl Suffered Injuries in Dog Attack

Last week, five-year-old Kaylee Bryant suffered minor injuries after a neighbor’s dog charged at her while walking through the Westerner Mobile Home Park in Elk Grove with her mother and one-year-old sister.

What Happened?

A neighbor’s surveillance system video shows the dog jumping over a fence and charging. Managers at the mobile home park reportedly said the dog’s owner was warned for violating a leash law, but some neighbors allegedly said they wanted the doggone.

Elk Grove Dog Attack Leave Residents Scared

Kaylee’s mother, Stephanie Bryant, said she is thankful that the incident was not worse but does not “want to even be walking around here” until something is done. Animal services officials from the City of Sacramento will reportedly contact the dog’s owner.

Dog Bites – A Public Health Epidemic

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), dog bites are regarded as a major public health epidemic. Approximately 1,000 U.S. citizens need emergency care for dog bite injuries each day.

Information released by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development also points to a significant increase in adult dog bites between 2005 and 2015. Overall, emergency room visits due to severe dog bites are up 44% across the last decade.

Emotional Toll Sometimes Greater than the Bite

The aftermath of a dog attack can often be painful, and emotional scarring can still occur even after any physical damage has healed.

More About Dog Attacks

Children usually are at an increased risk for dog bites on the head and/or neck and are more prone to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a dog attack. Some of the symptoms of PTSD include changes in mood, distressing flashbacks of the event, or difficulty concentrating.

The aftermath of an attack can also lead to feelings of anxiety or even fear when the victim is around dogs in the future, even if they were a dog lover previously.

Dog attacks can stem from various factors, including a medical problem like rabies in the dog or because of the dog’s predisposition or personality. However, the dog’s owner must prevent any incidents if any aggressive behavior is seen. California keeps dog owners responsible for their dogs, and you might have legal recourse against the owner, especially if the animal attacks unprovoked.

If you find yourself suffering at the hands of a dog bite, you must find the right personal injury attorney who understands the intricacies of a dog bite case. Keep in mind that injuries from a dog bite can also lead to things like internal bleeding or traumatic brain injuries, especially if the dog is of larger stature or more aggressive.
