Disaster Preparedness

I’m Ed Smith, a Winters auto accident attorney. Disasters often occur with little or no warning at all. Taking steps to prepare for natural and human-caused disasters can safeguard you and your family should such a situation arise. We’ve put together some readiness tips to help make sure you and your family are prepared.

Sign Up for Alerts

Register for a mass notification system. This will alert you to any potential dangers that could affect your area. It can alert you in times when you may be away from a radio, TV, or computer.

The alert systems listed below are great resources for Sacramento, Placer and Yolo county residents.

Registering with one of the alert systems will allow public safety officials to send out a mass text or recorded phone call to registered cell phone or landline numbers. You can also enter an e-mail address into the system so you can be notified by e-mail. Residents are able to choose their preferred method of contact at the time of registration.

Disaster Preparedness – Emergency Kit

A disaster or emergency readiness kit is a great tool to have in your home in the event of a disaster or emergency. It should contain basic and essential items your household would need if you had to evacuate with very little advance warning. When evacuation orders are put in place, often you won’t have ample time to go and collect the items you would need, and there’s always the chance of forgetting something. Having this kit prepared and ready in advance is a super idea. Below are some suggestions of what your kit should include:

  • Enough food and water for each member of your house for at least 72 hours.
  • Battery powered (with additional batteries) or hand crank radio.
  • First aid kit, include at least 3 days worth of any prescriptions you or your family may need.
  • If someone in your home has an allergy, it’s a good idea to include an Epi-Pen in your kit as well.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Whistle to alert others where you are located.
  • Matches or a lighter.
  • A pack of baby or hand wipes for sanitation purposes.

Family Binder

Along with the items in your emergency kit, it’s a good idea to have a family information binder with copies of all your families’ important information handy. Here are some ideas of what items should be included in a family binder.

  • A copy of everyone’s state issued drivers license or identification card.
  • A copy of any immunization records you may have for yourself or your children.
  • A good quality colored picture of everyone who lives in your home in case someone gets separated from your group.
  • A copy of health, car and homeowners or renters insurance policy information.
  • Advanced care directives if applicable.
  • Social Security Numbers written down.
  • Current prescription lists.
  • A spare credit card or some cash.
