The fence was located in the vicinity of the 900 block of Mayport Drive in between two homes located in Pittsburg. The fence fire extended to one of the homes and caused a potential threat to the second home involved in the incident.

Contra Costa County Fire Department Reports

Firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Department responded to the two-alarm fire call and contained the exterior fire at approximately 6:45 pm. A home occupant and two dogs safely escaped the smoke and flames. Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fence fire is still under investigation by authorities. How To Prevent Home Fires

Reviewing the following safety tips to prevent residential house fires:

  1. Place smoke detectors on each floor level of your home. It is highly recommended to install an ionization and photoelectric detector in your home for each system possesses different functions.
  2. Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen and garage for easy accessibility in case of an unexpected emergency.
  3. Fire blankets are essentially useful for a majority of kitchen fires. The fire blanket can be utilized to protect and prevent your hands from being burned.
  4. A fire safe box can be used to hold important documents such as family photographs, finance records, identification documents, and other important articles.
  5. Keep a rope or chain-link ladder in your home to provide a safe exit from a window from an upper story of your home. Learn how to use this type of ladder and be sure to teach your children how to use it as well in case of an emergency.
  6. When cooking, always stay in the kitchen at all times and always keep your sleeves and towels away from heat and flame contact. It is highly advised to place the handles of your pans and pots facing towards the back of the stove as a preventative for kitchen fire accidents.
  7. When purchasing a space heater, make sure that there is a “UL” mark on the system. The “UL” mark indicates that the system has been tested by Underwriters Laboratories. Always place your space heaters at a minimum distance of 3 feet away from any flammable objects. Space heaters that have automatic safety features are highly recommended to be used.
  8. If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove in your home, it is recommended that you should hire a service person to inspect and clean it annually. When you are done with your fire, place the hot ashes in a metal container, soak them with water, and place the container outside your home. Make sure that you never leave your fire unattended and always put the fire out before you step out or go to sleep.
  9. Never place electrical cords under carpets and rugs. Always make certain that all cords to your appliances are intact and not damaged. Do use too many power strips, extension cords or power strips for this may cause an overload of electricity and impose a fire threat to your home.
  10. As a safety measure, make sure that you have a disaster plan to carry out with all occupants in your home. An emergency supply kit is recommended to contain first aid medicine treatment, food, water, batteries, and flashlights. Organize a safety network in your community to be prepared in case of a fire emergency.
