Deadly Yolo Causeway Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Truck Accident Attorney. One person was tragically killed and two others seriously hurt on September 26, 2016 after a series of crashes that caused two people to be thrown from the Yolo Causeway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Truck Full of Tomatos Rear Ends Disabled Vehicle

A truck driver involved in the incident told KCRA news that he was driving east along the Yolo Causeway at approximately 2:45 a.m. The driver of the truck was hauling a full load of ripe tomatoes when he came upon a stalled sedan in the slow lane of traffic. The driver of the truck said he slammed on his brakes but was not able to avoid hitting the stalled vehicle. He rear ended the stalled vehicle on an unlit section of the bridge.

Investigators from the CHP indicated the sedan initially stalled out in the roadway following a minor auto accident.

Truck Driver Looks for Occupants of Vehicle He Hit

The truck driver went and checked the vehicle he rear ended and found no occupants inside. He eventually located a man and a woman standing at the shoulder of the roadway. It was very dark so the truck driver went back to his rig to retrieve a flashlight in order to alert oncoming traffic, the CHP said.

Second Collision Causes Two To Be Thrown From Bridge

While he was getting the flashlight, a Toyota Prius crashed into the stalled sedan and caused the woman and the man to be thrown off the Interstate 80 bridge. It was about 30 feet down to the Yolo Bypass below, investigators said.

Man Pronounced Deceased at Scene

Sadly, the man who had been standing on the roadway waiting for help was pronounced deceased at the scene after being thrown from the bridge. The woman he was standing with had to be hoisted up and transported to an area hospital. Officers indicated she was critically injured as a result of being thrown over the bridge during the collision.

Other Injuries

  • A third motorist was hospitalized with injuries described as moderate.
  • The man driving the truck full of tomatos was not injured.

Interstate 80 – Temporary Lane Closures

At least two lanes of Interstate 80 had to be shut down so rescue crews could work at the scene.

After the accident was cleared a lengthy process of cleaning up spilled tomatos ensued.

The lanes were finally reopened during the Monday morning commute.
