Crash Injures Susanville Woman

A two-car collision occurred near the Willard Fire in Lassen County on Sunday. According to personnel from Cal Fire, the fire is now about 50 percent contained. Along with the fire destroying two homes and four additional structures, a motorist became distracted by the fire and crashed into another vehicle. Two women suffered severe injuries as a result of the collision. One of the women is from Susanville.

What Happened?

Highway 36 near the Willard Fire was closed for a short time on Sunday, September 11, 2016, due to a motor vehicle accident, which caused traffic congestion in the area for over an hour.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a 39-year-old woman from Burney, Samantha Britoncaudle, was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry and was stopped at Highway 36 and 44. A 19-year-old Susanville resident, Myeisha Shepard, traveled westbound at approximately 55 miles per hour in a 2016 Nissan Rogue.

What Caused the Crash?

Britoncaudle reportedly told a CHP officer that she got distracted by the Willard Fire burning nearby. Officers said she made a left-hand turn onto Highway 36 directly in the path of the vehicle driven by the 19-year-old Susanville woman. The right side of Shepard’s Nissan was struck by the front of the Britoncaudle’s Toyota CamShepard’sDrivers Were Injured.

Britoncaudle and SBritoncaudle’sth were transported to local hospitals. Shepard received moderate injuries in the crash, and Britoncaudle suffered significant injuries.

Willard Fire Update

Road closures and mandatory evacuations were put in place as the Willard Fire burned out of control west of Susanville along the perimeter of Lassen National Forest.

Mandatory evacuations were made for residents living in the Hidden Valley Drive area, Gold Run area, and the Cheney Creek Drainage vicinity east of Devil’s Corral. Evacuation advisories were placed for residents along Devil’soad, River Bench Road, and the Susan Hills areas south of Susanville.

Road closures included Richmond Road at Gold Run Road and the 700 block of Susan Hills Drive.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter for those affected by the Willard Fire. The shelter is located at the Community Church of Susanville. The address of the shelter is 1400 Numa Road, Susanville, California.
