Stockton Truck Accident Kills One, Injures Four

I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton Truck Accident Attorney. Stockton’s position as a center of shipping and industry in the Central Valley can lead to tragic consequences. One person was killed and others injured in a massive collision involving at least two tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles. The man who died was allegedly ejected from his vehicle. At the time of the reporting by KTVU , it was unknown whether or not he was wearing a seatbelt.

California Truck Accidents Are Often Fatal

California’s population of more than 50 million is obviously one key factor in the number of dangerous truck accidents that occur in Stockton and throughout the state. However, the state Office of Traffic Safety noted that 55 traffic accidents involved death or injury in 2013, the most recent year that there was data. There were also a significant number that occurred at night. This affects truck accidents in Stockton more specifically.

Research shows that up to one-quarter of all truck accidents come from prescription drug use and another 20 percent or so come from over-the-counter drugs or illegal substances. Truck drivers are paid by the mile, not the hour, so there can be pressure to push one’s limits. Worse, these machines are subject to the laws of physics and the destruction can be massive.

The Physics of Truck Accidents Put Motorists at Risk

Momentum is how much energy a vehicle carries with it into a collision and in physics is simply mass times velocity. Tractor trailers can weigh as much as forty times as much as a passenger sedan, so even when they are going the the same speed as a car, trucks can cause significantly more damage as a result. If one thinks of them as small trains, then the image of one derailing or coming off of its wheels shows the potential devastation.

It Can Take a Truck Up to 500 Feet To Come to a Complete Stop

If a car isn’t there to slow down the path of a truck in order to prevent an accident, its brakes are not going to be much help either. According to one state’s department of transportation, it can take tractor trailer in Stockton more than 500 feet to come to a stop from 60 miles per hour. That’s four times as long as most cars, pickups and SUVs. As terrifying as it is, that means that a stopped motorist can see a truck trying to stop for up to three seconds and still get rear-ended.

These stark numbers mean that with any lapse of attention or use of substances, legal or not, when trucks are involved in collisions, the number of fatalities and severe injuries will go up significantly.
