Fun Things to do in Merced CA

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced CA Personal Injury Lawyer. Merced, California is an awesome place to visit and live. It is prized forits beautiful weather; the temperature tends to stay around 60 degrees in the winter, and while there are plenty of hot days in the summer, the humidity is low, so the heat is not as stifling as is it in more humid places like the East Coast and the Southern states east of the Mississippi River. Merced, California is also one of the most affordable cities in California in terms of housing prices. Another advantage of Merced, California, is its location, right between northern and southern California, not too far from the coast but also not too far from California’s inland beauty. Here are some fun things to do in Merced, California, on your next visit or, if you live in Merced, these are some activities to ward off summer boredom.

Visit the Applegate Park Zoo

The Applegate Park Zoo is no ordinary zoo. Here, you will not find lions, hippos, Komodo dragons, and polar bears that are way out of their element. Instead, the Applegate Park Zoo is a safe home for animals native to California. The residents of the Applegate Park Zoo came to the zoo from wildlife rescue centers and, for various reasons, such as injury or having been raised by humans since birth, cannot survive in the wild. Some afternoons, the zoo holds live animal presentations, where visitors can get up close and personal with California wildlife.

Take a Day Trip

Merced is located within driving distance of some of California’s most popular destinations. A car trip from Merced to Fresno takes only an hour, while Sacramento and San Francisco are each less than three hours away.

Visit Lake Yosemite

Lake Yosemite is a human-made lake located just outside the city limits of Merced, California. Almost any kind of recreational activity is permitted on the lake, from sailing, boating, and kayaking to jet skiing, paddle boating, and water skiing. Some areas of the lake are designated for swimming, and the lake shore is a great place for a barbecue. Lake Yosemite is also a popular destination for seekers of paranormal thrills; a ghost called the “lady in white” is said to haunt the lake’s tower. People have reported seeing her walking on the surface of the water, on the catwalk of the lake’s tower, and on the streets near the lake.

Go Shopping at the Merced Mall

On hot days, it feels great to soak up the air conditioning in the Merced Mall, the only enclosed mall in the Merced area. Its flagship stores are JC Penney’s, Kohl’s, Sears, and Target, and there are plenty of other specialty shops where you can buy clothing, jewelry, electronics, and snacks for affordable prices. The Merced Mall has a movie theater, which offers some $1 movie screenings during the summer.

Go on a Bike Ride

Bear Creek and Black Rascal Creek both have bike trails and are both located within the city limits of Merced, California.

Visit the Castle Air Museum

The Castle Air Force Base operated near Merced from 1941 until 1995, but the Castle Air Museum, at the site of the Air Force base, is still operational. It is one of the largest aerospace museums in the United States and features military aircraft from the time of World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War. Sometimes the museum holds open house events, during which visitors can tour the inside of one of the museum’s military aircraft. A new addition to the museum’s collection is a retired VC-9C air craft that has, on some occasions, served as Air Force One, and which has been described as a “flying White House.” Presidents Clinton and Reagan, Vice Presidents Cheney and Gore, and First Ladies Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Reagan have traveled on the aircraft. To round out your paranormal tour of Merced, you can keep your ears open for a mischievous ghost named “Arthur”, who is rumored to walk around inside the planes at the Castle Air Museum and to turn their lights on and off.

Visit the Mainzer Theater

The Mainzer Theater is a live music venue built in an Art Deco architectural style. The theater was originally built in the 1920s during the Art Deco period, but it eventually shut down. It was restored and reopened in 1999, and now it is a popular venue for live music concerts. Hip hop, indie rock, and punk rock acts frequently perform there. It was famous in the 2000s as an all ages music venue.

These are only a few of the reasons why Merced is a great place to visit. You will find no shortage of fun indoor and outdoor recreation in California’s most underrated city.
