Pedestrian Train Accident Statistics

A study performed in 1989, indicated that about 1200 fatal train accidents occurred involving both pedestrians and trains. Of the victims, twenty of the twenty-three studied were male which equates to approximately 87 percent male by gender. The average age was 31- one-years old and sixteen of the fatalities or about 70 percent involved the pedestrian consuming alcohol prior to the incident. The average severity of injury score was 21.4. Eight victims suffered from a amputation injury while they were pedestrians in a train and pedestrian accident. Two of the victim fatalities were railroad workers. The other nine were trespassing on railway property. Approximately 61 percent of the accidents took place from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Three victims died from their injuries. There was no major difference between those who consumed alcohol and those who suffered a traumatic amputation.

It was revealed in this study that non-railroad employed pedestrians who got hit by a train were more likely to suffer an amputation than an employee of the railroad.
