Traumatic Brain Injuries

Did you know that Traumatic Brain Injuries also affect victims of serious motor vehicle accidents? It’s true. It is more common than one would think.

Brain (Bruise) Contusion

A brain contusion can be caused by a direct blow to the skull. It causes bleeding and/or bruising inside the brain. If a contusion is big enough, it may require to be surgically removed because dead brain tissue can cause swelling inside the brain.

Concussion

A concussion is considered the most “minor” of traumatic brain injuries. Don’t be fooled though, it can cause big time impairments that can last a lifetime. Injuries resulting from whiplash can cause similar symptoms as a head injury. Rehabilitation works amazingly well in helping those with injuries to their neck and head. Many people are getting released from a doctor’s care without being properly referred for rehabilitation. Many times a rehabilitation facility or a neuropsychologist can diagnose their injuries and provide excellent rehabilitation and other beneficial resources.

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Related Causes

Concussions can be caused by a fall, or blows to the head, gunshot wounds, and whiplash injury from an auto or trucking accident. It can also occur in motorcycle accidents, bicycling accidents and pedestrian accidents. Open and closed head injuries can cause a concussion. Concussions are the most common kind of traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is caused by sudden impact to the head or through a quick change in the momentum of the head during an accident.

The Brain Has the Consistency of Gelatin

A concussion is a good example of an invisible wound. And since the brain has the same texture as gelatin, it is NOT necessary for the head to hit anything else in the car, for a person to sustain a concussion. The brain in the skull is propelled forward and strikes the skull itself because of the violent impact of a traffic collision.
