Widening Hazel Avenue

I’m Ed Smith, a Fair Oaks car accident lawyer. A traffic volume survey indicated that about 55,000 cars travel along Hazel Avenue per day. This makes it one of the most congested thoroughfares in Sacramento County. Today, the widening of Hazel Avenue – Phase II begins. This area is considered a primary route between Highway 50 to Orangevale.

How Many Lanes Will Be Added?

The project widens Hazel Avenue from four lanes to six lanes. It begins at Curragh Downs Drive. It extends to a little north of Sunset Avenue. Widening Hazel Avenue will be a welcome relief for motorists. But, some think it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. Major construction in the area may cause additional traffic congestion. The good news is it is intended to improve traffic safety. This is always a good thing.

Will Bike Lanes Be Added?

Yes. Bike lanes will be added. This will make the area better accessible to recreational bicyclists. Also improving the roadway for those who commute to school, work and around town by bicycle.

Will Project Improve Existing Traffic Congestion?

This congested thoroughfare has had several car crashes, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

The goal is to improve traffic congestion through this heavily traveled area. There will be a modification of traffic signals at three intersections to assist with traffic congestion issues. Traffic signal modifications were proposed to improve Curragh Downs, Sunset Avenue, La Serena Drive and Winding Way.

Will Pedestrian Sidewalks Be Added?

Yes. Separated sidewalks will be added along with landscaping beautification. The area will provide improved walking areas for those who enjoy getting out and about on foot.

What Other Improvements Might We See?

Project Description:

  • Upgrade roadway safety
  • Enlarge traffic capacity to ease delays and traffic congestion
  • Improve pedestrian and bicycle zones
  • Meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines
  • Beautify the project area
  • Overhead utilities will be moved underground, except for 69kV (electric)

What Will Widening Hazel Avenue Cost?

Widening Hazel Avenue project cost is $20 million. Funding comes from:

  • Measure A (sales tax funds)
  • District 3 (developer’s fees)
  • Federal funding sources
  • State Transportation improvement funding.

When Will Project Be Completed?

Phase II will take approximately 2 years to complete. Phase III is slated to begin in 2019.
