Staying Safe While Keeping Home Fires Burning
Staying safe while keeping home fires burning begins with a smoke detector. Having a properly installed and operating smoke detector saves lives. Whether we are asleep or awake we are pretty confident it is working to protect us. So we continue to stoke our fireplaces and wood burning stoves. We continue to breathe in the fragrant aroma of our well-watered Christmas trees. We can even bake cookies galore and roast another holiday bird. Perhaps even burn that bird. Right?
Smoke Detector Dangling from Ceiling?
Truth be told, some households may have a battery removed from a particular smoke detector. Or a smoke detector dangling from the ceiling perhaps? We all know the one. It is located near the kitchen. We are sure there are plenty of excuses for taking this drastic measure. It may have seemed appropriate at the time.
Things that get our Smoke Detector Hissing
- Broiling a steak
- Steam from the shower
It is quite annoying when this happens. It is so tempting to remove the battery or pull the whole unit off the ceiling to shut it up. In the alternative, we wave a towel back and forth underneath the screeching unit like raving maniacs until it shuts up.
Less Than Two Minutes To Get Out
Fire officials remind us that we may have less than two minutes to get out of a burning building. All the more reason to keep the smoke detector connected to its power source.
Recent Rash of House Fires
Sacramento County saw it’s fair share of fire tragedy this season. We recall two or three house fires where loss of life resulted. We remember two young children lost their lives in a South Sacramento fire. We also recall from the news that an elderly woman died in a Citrus Heights house fire. A veteran succumbed to smoke and flames in his duplex fire in Sacramento. It has quieted down a bit since the first week of December. Yet, we still must practice staying safe while keeping the home fires burning.
December Most Fatal Month For House Fires
December is still the deadliest month for California house fires. It is a common time to burn candles, use space heaters and run electrical cords all over the place for the holidays. We know the routine: keep the space heater three feet away from any combustible item, do not connect more than three strands of electrical lighting to your tree or home, never leave candles unattended, etc.
