Deaths due to Unintentional Injuries (Just the stats)

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Attorney and this article is one of a continuing series called  “Just the Stats” that indicate the causes of Injuries and Accidental Deaths throughout the United States.

Poisonings are the number 1 cause of unintentional death in the United States. Poisonings include deaths by gases, drugs, medicines and vapors. in 2012, 37,000 people were killed due to poisonings.

Most deaths were in the age 25-65 age range.

Motor Vehicle Accidents killed  36,000 Americans in 2012. Most deaths were in the 75 Plus age range, followed closely by the 15-24 Age Range.

Falls killed over 25,000 people in 2012 and were the third leading cause of death.

Almost all fall deaths were experienced by those 75 and older.

Choking was the 4th highest cause of death at 4,700 people. Again, almost all of those were in the 75 plus age range.

Drownings killed  3,900 people in 2012. Most drownings were in the 5 years and under age bracket.

Fires, flames or smoke was the 6th highest cause of death in 2012. Over 3.000 people died in this manner.  The vast majority were 75 years old or older.

Mechanical suffocation including hanging, strangulation and suffocation in confined spaces took 2100 lives in 2012. 65% of these deaths were children and infants under 4 years old. Many of them died because of suffocation in a crib. This category is the fasting growing category of causes of deaths in 2012.
