Fatal 120 Manteca Accident

Fatal 120 Manteca Accident

On Monday, October 3, 2016, a fatal trucking accident occurred on State Route 120 around 5:10 p.m., in what the California Highway Patrol (CHP) described as a horrific chain reaction crash.

What Happened?

A big rig, loaded with product and owned by J.B. Carrier in Nevada, was traveling eastbound on State Route 120 approaching the Main Street exit in Manteca at an unknown speed when a row of vehicles in front of the truck suddenly slowed down or came to a stop.

There were a total of 5 vehicles and one big rig involved. Many of the involved vehicles had to be removed from the scene on flatbed trucks as they sustained too much damage to be safely removed by tow trucks.

The sequence of events:

  • The big rig collided into the back of a Chevrolet pick-up truck. The big rig then jack-knifed and came to a stop.
  • The Chevrolet pick-up truck was pushed into the rear end of a Honda Accord, went over the top of the Honda and flipped.
  • The Honda Accord crashed into the back of a Mercedes, veered off onto the shoulder and caught on fire.
  • The Mercedes crashed into a Chevrolet sedan and then flipped and came to a rest colliding with a Chevrolet SUV.
  • The Chevrolet SUV overturned as a result of the impact from the Mercedes.

First on Scene

Chief David Marques from the Manteca Fire Department was first on the scene of the accident; he helped to stabilize heads and spines of the injured victims by supporting them and administering first aid. Other good Samaritans stopped to help and used fire extinguishers to prevent smoking vehicles from catching on fire.

Were There Injuries?

Yes. There were several ambulances called to the accident scene. Two parties involved in the multi-vehicle crash were rushed to a local hospital with major injuries. Six others were also transported by ambulance to area hospitals with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda Accord was trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by Manteca Fire Department. Sadly, the driver of the Honda Accord passed away from injuries received in the accident.

Investigation and Closures

The CHP is conducting an investigation of the accident to find a cause. The weather was ruled out as a factor of the accident. Caltrans was on scene assisting the CHP. The Caltrans website reported that all Eastbound lanes of State Route 120 near the Main Street exit were closed due to the accident and motorists were advised to take alternative routes. State Route 120 reopened in the late hours of Monday evening.
