South Lake Tahoe City Council Candidate Seriously Injured

One person passed away and approximately four others suffered minor to severe injuries in a tragic head-on collision involving an SUV and an RV on Friday, September 23, 2016. The accident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. along the Kingsbury Grade.

Council Candidate Jason Collin Among the Injured

Involved in the accident was Jason Collin, a South Lake Tahoe City Council candidate and his wife, Natalie who were riding along with five others in a rented RV. According to a Collin family friend, none of Jason and Natalie’s children were present in the RV.

What Happened?

Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting that a Nissan Pathfinder crossed over into oncoming traffic Friday afternoon and collided with the RV head-on. The SUV, a Nissan Pathfinder, which was being driven by a Wellington woman caught on fire during the impact. The woman had to be extricated. She was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical in Reno for treatment. Sadly, she was pronounced dead shortly after 4:00 p.m. Her identity is being withheld until family members have been notified of her death.

What Caused the Crash?

It is still to soon to know for sure. It usually takes one to two weeks to prepare a traffic collision report. During the investigative process, it will be determined if drugs and alcohol were a factor. We’ve learned that the Nevada Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Unit will be conducting the investigation.

Serious Leg Injury Sustained by Council Candidate Jason Collin

Jason Collin was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nevada by air ambulance with serious injuries to one of his legs. His condition is not listed as life threatening. His wife, Natalie, was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital where she was treated for a minor injury and released later the same evening. The other people involved in the collision had to be extricated and were transferred to area hospitals by air ambulance and ground transportation. The identity of the victims has not been released. One of the injured is listed in serious condition.

Accident Happened Near Tramway

The accident happened approximately 1-1/2 miles away from the top of the summit, near Tramway. Responding agencies included Nevada Highway Patrol, East Fork Fire Department, and Tahoe Douglas Fire Department. Nevada Highway Patrol shut down State Route 207, more commonly known as the Kingsbury Grade, in both directions Friday as a result of the major motor vehicle injury crash. It reopened shortly after 7:20 p.m.
